Sexuality is a broad spectrum. It isn’t easy for people to understand their sexuality in a society where men and women marrying each other is the norm. Taboo makes it more difficult. The social stigma surrounding labels it as humiliation, a form of insult. Even if it becomes more accepted, it’s not as simple as being ‘gay’ or ‘straight’. Here’s how you can understand your sexuality:

Different types of sexual orientation: 

1. Allosexual – This term is used to describe someone who experiences sexual pleasure. This term was coined to make the asexual people feel more comfortable about themselves.
2. Androsexual – This term is used to describe someone who feels sexually attracted to males or masculine figures irrespective of their biology or gender assigned at birth.
3. Aromantic – This term is used to describe someone who feels no romantic connection with any individual irrespective of their gender/sexuality.
4. Autoromantic – This term is used to describe someone who is romantically attracted to themselves
5. Bicurious – This term is used to describe someone who is exploring bisexuality
6. Bisexual – This term is used to describe someone who sexually attracted to more than one gender. It can be similar to or different than their own.
7. Biromantic – This term is used to describe someone who only feels romantically attracted to more than one gender.
8. Cupiosexual – This term is used to describe someone who doesn’t feel sexual attraction yet desires to have a sexual relationship.
9. Demisexual – This term is used to describe someone who develops sexual attraction under certain conditions only, i.e., after being emotionally connected with an individual.
10. Demiromantic – This term is used to describe someone who develops romantic feelings for an individual under specific circumstances only.
11. Gay (Homosexual) – This term is used to describe someone who is attracted to people with the same gender as theirs.
12. Graysexual/romantic – This term is used to describe someone who still is on the graysexual of LGBTQIA+ spectrum.
13. Gynesexual – This term is used to describe someone who feels sexually attracted to females or feminine masculine figures irrespective of their biology or gender assigned at birth.
14. Straight (Heterosexual) – This term is used to describe someone who is sexually attracted to people of the opposite gender.
15. Libidoist asexual – This term is used to describe someone who only enjoys sexual pleasure through masturbation.
16. Non-libidoist asexual – This term is used to describe someone who does not enjoy sexual pleasure under any circumstances.
17. Omnisexual/Pansexual – This term is used to describe someone who is attracted to individuals regardless of their gender and sexual orientation.

Questions you should ask yourself if you’re confused about your sexual orientation

It doesn’t necessarily have to mean you’re gay if you’re questioning yourself about it. It also doesn’t mean that you aren’t. I have faced a time where I would ask myself if I was completely and a hundred per cent heterosexual even though I had only dated men until then. Here are the questions you should ask yourself –

Write down the answers on a piece of paper and refer to the list above.

1. Do I see myself going down on someone who is the same sex as I am?
2. Can I imagine myself going on a date with someone who is the same sex as I am?
3. Do I see myself having sex with/fucking someone who is the same sex as I am?
4. Am I being influenced by the growing acceptance of LGBTQIA+?
