Alia Bhatt broke the internet by sharing the poster of her upcoming movie Gangubai Kathiawadi on instagram. Many celebrities praised her new look, and fans have gone crazy. This will be her very first project with Sanjay Leela Bansaali, that’s what makes the movie so special. Sanjay Leela Bansaali’s films female roles are known for having different shades far away from monotonous female roles in typical Bollywood movies. Potrayal of the characters are vivid and unique in its own way.

Who’s Gangubai Kathiawadi?

As you know the film revolves around the character Gangubai Kathiawadi. But who is she? Gangubai Kathiawadi was a brothel owner in Kamathipura, Mumbai. She managed many brothels in the red light district of the city and thus earned her title ‘Madam of Kamathipura’.

Unknown Facts about Gangubai Kathiawadi

1. When she was a young girl, she ran away from home with her boyfriend named Ramnik Lal. Unfortunately her boyfriend was not a nice person, he sold her into prostitution for 500 Rupees. Later she becomes the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura.

2. She was from Kathiawad area of Gujarat and hence the name Kathiawadi.

3. There is an entire chapter about Gangubai Kathiawadi in Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.

4. Other than owning and managing brothels, she also had connections with the Mumbai underworld and also peddled drugs and gave orders for murders. She became so rich that she used to own a black Bentley, the only brothel owner to have one.

5. She had lot of empathy for sex workers because of what she has been through. She took care of the girls like a mother.

6. She wanted to become an actress. She was a huge fan of Bollywood movies. It is said her all-time favourite actress were Asha Parekh, Hema Malini, and Meena Kumari.

7. She believed in women empowerment. After knowing what young girls went through in this profession she used her power to raise voice. She even approached then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to discuss problems faced by sex workers. All she wanted was rights for sex workers and people to treat them respectfully.

8. Her thoughts and work won many hearts.Her idols and framed photographs were commonly seen in homes in the area. She was loved by the community.
